Given the times we’re in right now, the pandemic and all, you may be thinking about taking on anyone as your client to generate income.

Sometimes when we experience a lull in business, it can be tough to keep your ideal client avatar in mind.

Instead, you find yourself jumping at the chance to work with anyone who comes along with credit card in hand. The trouble with this scenario is you can find yourself with a roster full of clients who:

  • Aren’t willing or able to do the work required
  • Spend all their time telling you why your ideas and advice won’t work
  • Drain your energy and make you dread coaching

And while this might help bring in a bit of cash short-term, it won’t do anything for your reputation or your self-esteem.

Then the absolute worst thing happens, your confidence takes a hit and you start questioning your ability to be an effective coach.

I’ve even seen some coaches give up and throw in the towel after experiencing this over and over.

To avoid this entire situation, you must be clear on two points:

  1. Who you serve, your ideal client
  2. What problem you solve for your ideal client

These two things must be at the forefront of your mind in your marketing messaging, social media posts, and even your conversations when asked about your business and what you do.

Almost every time I’ve diverted away from these two points, I end up in a client relationship that doesn’t serve me or the client.

Not being clear on these two points can block your ability to generate real income in your business. If you’ve heard other coaches say, “you must know your ideal client”, and you turned a deaf ear to it – this could be what’s blocking your income.

Being totally transparent, I got tired of hearing this same advice and I kept trying to overlook it because I didn’t want to do the work to discover who my ideal client was.

I used to think I would limit my income if I focused on one ideal client.

Can I just say, I was so wrong? The more I tried to appeal to everyone the longer it took for me to get real paying clients. This is exactly why we spend extra time on identifying your ideal client in my From Overwhelm to Profits coaching program. This is one of THE most important things you must know to build a successful business.

Remember, as coaches and solopreneurs, our clients are the lifeblood of our business. Stay focused on helping the ‘right’ clients, your ideal clients.
