There is a kind of waiting many women know intimately.
It does not always look like standing still.
Sometimes it looks like doing all the right things. Continuing to show up. Serving clients. Managing responsibilities. Keeping the business moving. Holding everything together with grace and capability.
From the outside, it may not look like waiting at all.
But inside, there is a quiet hesitation.
A pause before telling the truth.
A softening of what you really want.
A tendency to look around for approval before honoring what you already know.
A belief that you need more certainty, more validation, or more proof before you are allowed to choose yourself.
This is one of the most subtle ways women abandon themselves.
Not always dramatically, often quietly.
Through the decisions they delay, the desires they minimize, the truth they edit, and the old roles they keep performing long after they have outgrown them.
And the deeper truth is this: you do not need permission to matter.
You are already worthy. Choose yourself.
That does not mean choosing yourself will always feel easy. It may feel tender. It may stir guilt. It may challenge old patterns. It may ask you to stop waiting for everyone else to understand before you honor what is true.
But freedom begins when a woman stops asking life to choose her and begins choosing herself.
This was a very tender lesson I had to learn on my own journey. I experienced many times in my life where I had given my power over to others seeking validation or permission.
I don’t want that for you. Once a woman chooses herself everything changes.
Here are five signs you may be waiting for permission to choose yourself.
1. You keep waiting to feel more ready before you move
Readiness can be comforting because it gives us the illusion of safety.
We tell ourselves we will move when we feel more confident, when the timing is better, when the plan is clearer, when the business is more stable, when we have one more piece of proof that we are doing the right thing.
And sometimes, patience is wise.
But sometimes, “I’m not ready yet” becomes a softer way of saying, “I am afraid to trust what I already know.”
Readiness is not always a feeling that arrives before action.
Sometimes readiness is created through one honest, aligned step.
A woman does not always feel fully ready before she chooses herself. Often, she chooses herself while still feeling tender, uncertain, and human.
The question is not always, “Do I feel ready?”
Sometimes the better question is, “What do I already know that I keep postponing?”
2. You keep looking outside yourself for confirmation
Support is beautiful.
A wise mentor, trusted friend, coach, community, or sounding board can help you hear yourself more clearly. We are not meant to do everything alone.
But there is a difference between receiving support and outsourcing your knowing.
When you are waiting for permission, you may keep collecting opinions, asking for feedback, seeking signs, or explaining your desire in hopes that someone else will finally validate it enough for you to trust it.
But external validation can only carry you so far.
It may reassure you for a moment, but it cannot replace the inner permission that comes from worthiness.
At some point, you have to come back to yourself and ask:
“What is true for me?”
Not what looks best from the outside, or what someone else would choose, or what seems easiest to explain.
What is true for me?
That question may not always give you the most convenient answer.
But it often gives you the most honest one.
3. You minimize your desires because they feel hard to explain
Many women are deeply skilled at talking themselves out of what they want.
They can rationalize why now is not the time. They can explain why the desire is unrealistic, inconvenient, too much, too risky, or not practical enough. They can make a beautiful case for why they should be content with what already exists.
But desire often carries information.
Not every desire needs to become a decision. Not every longing needs to be acted on immediately. But our desires deserve to be heard before they are dismissed.
Sometimes what you want is not random.
Sometimes it is the beginning of clarity.
Sometimes it is pointing you toward a version of your life or business that feels more honest, more aligned, and more free.
When you are waiting for permission, you may believe your desire has to make sense to everyone before you are allowed to honor it.
But choosing yourself begins when you stop treating your desire like an inconvenience.
You are allowed to want what you want, to listen before you explain, and to let your desire be information, not evidence that you are ungrateful.
4. You stay in what no longer fits because disappointing others feels too hard
This is such a tender one.
Many women have been praised for being easy, agreeable, available, generous, and dependable. They learned to anticipate needs, carry emotional weight, keep the peace, and stay loyal to versions of themselves that other people preferred.
So, when something no longer fits, it can feel disruptive to admit it.
A business model that once felt right may now feel constricting. An offer may no longer reflect the depth of your work. A commitment may feel misaligned. A way of showing up may feel more performative than true.
And yet, instead of honoring that knowing, you may stay.
Not because it is aligned, but because disappointing someone feels more uncomfortable than disappointing yourself.
But every time you abandon your truth to maintain someone else’s comfort, something inside you gets quieter.
Choosing yourself does not mean disregarding others.
It means your truth gets a seat at the table too.
It means you are allowed to evolve.
It means you are allowed to stop building your life and business around who people needed you to be in a previous season.
5. You keep making your truth smaller so it feels easier to understand
Sometimes waiting for permission shows up in the way you edit yourself.
You soften the sentence before you post it. You water down the message before you say it. You make your work more explainable, more palatable, or more familiar than it actually feels inside of you.
Not because you lack clarity.
But because being fully honest may require being more visible than feeling comfortable.
This is especially true for women whose work is evolving.
You may sense that your message has deepened. Your voice has changed. Your work is asking to be expressed with more honesty, more intimacy, and more truth.
But then the old questions appear.
Will people understand this?
Will this be too much?
Will this change how they see me?
Will this still be acceptable?
Those questions are human.
But they do not have to be the ones leading your life or business.
You do not need to make your truth smaller in order to be safe enough to share it.
Your voice is allowed to mature.
Your message is allowed to deepen.
Your business is allowed to reflect the woman you are now, not only the woman people have known before.
The deeper shift: from waiting to choosing
Waiting for permission can feel protective. It can feel like you are being careful, responsible, or wise.
And sometimes you are.
But if waiting has become the place where your truth keeps disappearing, it may be time to choose differently.
Choosing yourself does not always require a dramatic life change.
Sometimes it begins with one honest admission:
“This no longer fits.”
“I know what I want.”
“I am tired of waiting to feel ready.”
“I have been looking for approval where I actually need to practice self-trust.”
“I matter here too.”
That last one is important.
Because choosing yourself begins with the willingness to matter in your own life.
Not later, not after everyone understands, not after you have earned more proof.
Now.
Worthiness comes first.
Worthiness gives us permission.
Permission creates courage.
Courage creates freedom.
And freedom begins when a woman chooses herself.
